Phoenix Commons Community Living and Amenity Spaces
While the majority of shared community spaces are located on the first floor, common living areas are incorporated into all four floors to enhance community life throughout the building. Universal design features assure that residents can continue to enjoy the community spaces well into the future. Members participate in personalizing the common living areas so they reflect the community’s shared interests, needs and aesthetics. See below for how we have developed these spaces.
Socializing Together as Community
In the Kitchen and Dining area, members create and enjoy delicious community dinners twice a week (and guests attend from time to time). Volunteer cooks take turns exercising their creative culinary skills to delight members, while diners find an opportunity to enjoy each other’s company over a fine meal.
Members, family members, and friends enjoy potluck dinners every Friday evening as well, and increasingly for spontaneous meals and gatherings. Members plan social events for holidays and invite friends and family members to these festive gatherings. One popular holiday event is the cookie-baking activity where grandchildren help make Christmas cookies in the Community Kitchen.
The Hobby Room, created and set up by members, now hosts a number of creative activities, including art, woodworking, and other crafts. Members playing the piano in the 3rd floor Common Room often serenade those nearby with classical music.
The Community Room sports a large 55” television and a ping pong table. Comfortable chairs attract members to movie nights, sporting events, award shows and political events. The room also accommodates presentations and meetings.
The Library is a centrally-located meeting place where members often gather spontaneously to read or chat. It is stocked with hundreds of donated books and periodicals, and even a few board games. Members use it while waiting on laundry in the communal Laundry Room located nearby.
Dedication to Fitness and Wellness
Members regularly use Phoenix Commons’ fully-equipped Fitness Room and large outdoor Jacuzzi (complete with colorful lights, music, and an automated lift chair). Some members regularly gather in the Jacuzzi to enjoy a dose of “water therapy” and good company. Members also enjoy meditation in the quiet of the 4th floor common room. The Garage has a locked space for our active members’ bicycles, paddle boards, and kayaks.
Our Wellness Team treats members to regular presentations on how to stay fit and how to navigate through life’s many changes. Members often volunteer to help each other with needs associated with an accident, illness, or hospitalization.
The Landscaping Team has planted organic herbs and vegetables in Garden spaces located in various areas of Phoenix Commons. We use the produce to supplement the Community dinners, with the excess shared among members for their own meals.
Shared Office Space
An Office space supports the community’s business-related activities. The office contains a printer, copier, three workstations, a desktop computer, file cabinets and other business related equipment and storage. Members of the community work in the office during the day to assist in accepting packages and helping outside guests and contractors needing entry.
The Physical Plant Management and Security Teams work together to assure the safety and maintenance of the grounds and building of Phoenix Commons. Security cameras are installed at various entry areas and access points get regular security improvements. Members work closely with the neighborhood watch group and local patrols to ensure the safety of Phoenix Commons members.
Welcoming Family, Guests, and the Wider Community
Two Guest Rooms at Phoenix Commons accommodate members’ family and guests who come to visit overnight. The rooms are complimentary and have been designed to provide a space for temporary guests. In addition, Phoenix Commons seeks to be a welcoming place for the wider community to attend events such as community meetings, political events, book signings, musical and arts events, and forums of interest to both residents and others.
On the ground floor, members’ private tandem parking includes limited electric car hookups.
